Hypertension
Hypertension
High blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke in South Africa.
What is Hypertension?
Hypertension (high blood pressure) occurs when the force of blood against artery walls is consistently too high. Blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg is considered high. It is one of the most common chronic conditions in South Africa, affecting an estimated 1 in 3 adults.
Symptoms
Often called the "silent killer" because it typically has no symptoms. Some people may experience headaches, shortness of breath, or nosebleeds, but these signs are not specific and usually only occur when blood pressure has reached a severe level.
Management
Treatment includes lifestyle modifications (reduced salt intake, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol) and medication. Common medications include ACE inhibitors, ARBs, calcium channel blockers, and diuretics. Consistent medication adherence is crucial.
SA Context
South Africa has one of the highest rates of hypertension in sub-Saharan Africa. Access to primary healthcare clinics for regular check-ups and free chronic medication through the public sector can help manage this condition.
