Home blood pressure monitoring – record useful readings
How to prepare for a home blood-pressure reading, record a useful trend and know when a number needs urgent medical help.
One reading is a snapshot; a pattern is more useful
Home blood-pressure monitoring can help a clinician see a pattern outside the clinic. The result is only useful when the cuff, posture, rest period and recording method are consistent. Do not diagnose yourself from one high or low reading, and do not change treatment without advice.
Set up the reading well
- Use a validated upper-arm monitor with the right cuff size when possible.
- Sit quietly with your back supported, feet on the floor and the arm supported.
- Avoid taking the reading immediately after exercise, caffeine, smoking or a stressful rush.
- Take the number after resting as advised and record the date, time and context.
Bring the monitor and the record to a clinic review when possible so the technique and device can be checked.
Record what changes the interpretation
- Time of day and whether it was before or after prescribed medicine.
- Symptoms such as dizziness, chest pain or breathlessness.
- Exercise, illness, pain, stress or a missed dose.
- Several readings taken according to the plan rather than a single repeated panic check.
Some readings need immediate help
Common questions
- How do I monitor blood pressure at home?
- Use a suitable validated monitor, rest quietly, sit with the arm supported and record readings with their time and context. Ask a clinic to check your technique.
- What should I do if my home blood pressure is high?
- Repeat it after resting as advised and contact your clinician for interpretation. Seek urgent help for chest pain, breathlessness, stroke signs, confusion or collapse.
