HIV treatment adherence – staying undetectable

Practical, non-judgemental ways to protect HIV treatment adherence, manage missed doses and get help before a treatment interruption grows.

Adherence is a support problem, not a character test

Taking HIV treatment consistently helps keep the viral load suppressed and protects health. Missed doses can happen because of travel, stigma, side effects, work, forgetfulness or a refill problem. The useful response is to contact the clinic early and solve the barrier, not to hide it or double doses without advice.

Find the weak point in the routine

  • A fixed daily cue such as brushing teeth or a meal.
  • A private reminder that works with your phone and living situation.
  • A refill plan that allows for weekends, travel and clinic queues.
  • A safe person or healthcare worker to contact when stigma or side effects make treatment difficult.

The HIV clinic can review side effects, interactions, treatment failure concerns and a missed-dose plan. Bring all medicines and supplements to that conversation.

After a missed dose or interruption

  1. Follow the missed-dose instructions provided for your regimen or contact the clinic.
  2. Do not take extra doses to compensate unless the clinician specifically tells you to.
  3. Record the interruption and any reason so the clinic can help.
  4. Arrange the next refill and monitoring appointment before leaving the conversation.

Common questions

What should I do if I miss HIV medication?
Follow the instructions for your exact regimen or contact the HIV clinic. Do not guess, double up or stop treatment without advice.
Can missed HIV treatment make viral load detectable?
Treatment interruptions can affect viral suppression, but the person's result depends on many factors. Tell the clinic about missed doses so it can arrange the right follow-up.
