Malaria travel prevention – questions to ask
How to plan for malaria risk when travelling in or from South Africa: area-specific advice, mosquito protection and when fever needs urgent care.
Malaria risk depends on where and when you travel
Malaria risk is not the same across South Africa or across neighbouring countries. Before travel, ask a clinician or travel service about the exact destination, season, accommodation and your health. Prevention can include mosquito avoidance and, for some itineraries, prescribed preventive medicine.
Do not forget the mosquito measures
- Use an appropriate repellent and follow its label.
- Wear clothing that reduces exposed skin after dusk where relevant.
- Use screens, nets or air conditioning where available.
- Ask about pregnancy, children, chronic conditions and medicine interactions before preventive treatment.
A fever after visiting a malaria-risk area needs prompt medical attention. Tell the clinician exactly where you travelled, even if the trip was weeks earlier.
Prepare before leaving
- Check the current NICD travel advice for the destination.
- Book a travel-health conversation early enough to arrange any prescription.
- Pack a medicine list and the details of your route.
- Know where you will seek care if fever develops during or after the trip.

Common questions
- How do I prevent malaria when travelling?
- Ask about destination-specific preventive medicine and combine it with mosquito-bite prevention. The right plan depends on the route, season and your health.
- How long after travel can malaria symptoms appear?
- Timing varies, so tell a clinician about malaria-risk travel even when the trip was not recent. Fever after travel should be assessed promptly.
